As mentioned, the Social Security Administration (or “SSA”) now allows for online applications for Social Security Disability benefits by going to: www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability.
You can also apply for SSI benefits online by going to: www.socialsecurity.gov/pgm/ssi.htm.
You can still apply for benefits in person by visiting a local Social Security office. Call (800) 772-1213 to apply online or to make an appointment at a local SSA office. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call the SSA TTY number: (800) 325-0778. If you have difficulty reading text online, or have a learning disability, you can utilize BrowseAloud for free. The SSA estimates the initial application to take between 10 and 30 minutes and there are required documents and specific forms required to complete the application.
Statistics show that a majority of initial applications are denied. You have sixty (60) days to ask for reconsideration of the denial. If your application is denied again after you ask for reconsideration,
